Mandela Legacy Foundation Monthly Newsletter – July Recap

Celebrating a Month of Reflection and Progress

Welcome to our monthly newsletter! We are delighted to share the impactful events and milestones from July. Our dedication to empowering communities and fostering sustainable development continues to guide our efforts.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

Mandela Day Celebrations

On July 18th, we celebrated Mandela Day, a global call to action that honours the legacy of Nelson Mandela by encouraging individuals and organisations to take time to help improve the lives of others. This day reminds us of Mandela’s commitment to justice, equality, and human rights, inspiring us to continue his work in empowering communities and fostering positive change.

UAE Delegation Visit

This month, we had the privilege of hosting a delegation from the UAE. The Aletihad News Center commemorated Mandela Day by celebrating the historic meeting between the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and Nelson Mandela during his visit to Abu Dhabi in 1995.

Dr. Hamad Al Kaabi, Chief Aletihad News Center Officer, presented a commemorative photograph of this meeting to our CEO Zondwa Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela and Chairman of the Mandela Legacy Foundation, in Cape Town. Additionally, Dr. Al Kaabi presented a copy of the Aletihad newspaper issue published after the historic meeting, which featured Sheikh Zayed awarding Mandela the Order of Zayed Medal First Class.

Dr. Al Kaabi also presented Zondwa Mandela with a Certificate of Appreciation for his remarkable contribution to the TRENDS Global Roundtable Series Middle East and Africa Region: Unlocking the Potential of Think Tanks, New Ideas, and Innovative Strategies for Impactful Engagement. Along with the certificate, Zondwa received an ornament in recognition of his participation and speech.

This exchange highlighted the mutual respect and shared values of peace, coexistence, and justice between the two leaders. Dr. Al Kaabi emphasized that Mandela holds a significant place in the UAE, with both countries championing the principles of coexistence, dialogue, and the rejection of racism.

Looking Ahead

Focus on Women’s Month and MLF Women

As we enter August, the Mandela Legacy will be dedicating our efforts to Women’s Month and the initiatives of MLF Women. Our foundation stands on the achievements of individuals who have embodied the struggles and triumphs in the pursuit of equality and growth. We prioritise interventions for those marginalised by society, understanding the proven benefits of women’s active participation in societal progress.

We are devoted to advocating for and fostering personal growth among women, acknowledging their vital and efficient contributions to society. This strategic focus aligns with our belief that empowering women is crucial for sustainable development and social justice.

This month, we will highlight the women who have significantly impacted the Mandela Legacy Foundation.
